Learn how to remove the cylinder
There are several security lock components. In order to remove the cylinder, you will actually have to remove other parts so the cylinder can be seen and removed, too. The spindle is a rod, which connects the two handles together. Since, the job of one component reflects on the job of the other, know that when you move the handle the spindle turns the mechanism so the door can open. So, it must be removed to reach and remove the cylinder, too. You will need a special cylinder removing tool in order to turn the spindle and align the boss with the slot. Then, use the same tool to remove the spindle. Insert it edgewise between the detent slide and the screw stem and rotate it clockwise. The springs on the cylinder won't make your life easy. You must try to remove their tension and by using the free thumb, you can help the spindle to pop out.
Time to remove the cylinder! With the same tool, try to keep the springs in place and by moving the tool up and down try to remove the cylinder. Now, check possible problems with the components. If the spindle must be replaced, make sure the slot with the boss is lined up and you hear the detent spring snapping when placing the spindle. If you need to replace the cylinder, make sure the pin cover and the key cuts are placed in the upward position. Once the cylinder is aligned, you should hear the retaining springs once again snapping into their right position. If planning to rekey the high security lock, the plug of the cylinder must be removed since the pins found on the plug are the ones replaced. For that task, you will need to insert the key and turn it and use the right cylinder plug tool to pull the plug out. When you are engaging in such tasks, always pay attention to the pins and springs. If they are not in the right position or not installed properly, you will have a hard time inserting and using the key. Simply put, this would mean a house lockout.
